Dr Bike helps keep more than 950 Bristol bikes on the road since January 2025

The free bike repair programme continues to encourage safer, more sustainable travel across Bristol.

More than 950 bikes have been serviced through the Dr Bike programme since January 2025, helping hundreds of people cycle safely around the city.

Delivered by Bristol BID in partnership with Life Cycle, the free service has completed 617 bike services in 2025 and a further 332 in 2026, making it over 4000 bikes serviced since the beginning of the partnership in 2021. Regular sessions continue to take place at locations across the city, alongside pop-up events hosted at workplaces and business premises.

The latest Dr Bike survey highlights the continued value of the initiative for Bristol’s cyclists:

  • 97% of respondents rated the service as good or excellent
  • 99% said they would recommend Dr Bike to friends or colleagues
  • 39% reported cycling more often after using the service
  • 1 in 15 said they booked a session specifically to enable them to cycle to work

The findings demonstrate the important role Dr Bike plays in removing barriers to cycling by giving people confidence that their bikes are safe and roadworthy, while supporting healthier, more sustainable commuting.

Tom Swithinbank, Sustainable and Green BID Project Manager, said:

“It’s brilliant to see the continued growth of our Dr Bike service and the feedback from it. We are pleased to support those that cycle to work and want to with this service, one of the many Bristol BID offers for staff working in the city centre”

Ed Norton, Life Cycle’s CEO, added:

"We're grateful to Bristol BID for their continued partnership and support for our charitable work. We know that access to cycling can have a transformative impact on health, wellbeing and connection to local communities. The free Dr Bike service helps clients choose active, sustainable travel for work and everyday journeys, contributing to a cleaner, greener environment. We're delighted to help more people across Bristol enjoy everything cycling has to offer."

Life Cycle provides qualified mechanics who carry out each 30 minute Dr Bike session, with funding from Bristol BID and Bristol City Council’s Transport Engagement Programme helping to make the service free for workers across the city. Alongside bike maintenance, Life Cycle also offers free cycle confidence sessions with qualified instructors, supporting people who are new to cycling or looking to build confidence riding on Bristol’s roads.

What Dr Bike users are saying:

‘This is an excellent service that is really appreciated. My only method of commuting to work is cycling and my visits have improved the performance of my bike’

‘Great service for someone who commutes regularly. I feel more safe on my bike after having it checked.’

‘It is so handy to be able to have your bike checked and key things fixed as part of your working day. It is good to know someone impartial is advising on the safety of your bike with no incentive to them so you know the advice is solid.’

‘It’s been fantastic to have the bike serviced at work – it can be really difficult to book a service near home without it being disruptive to my commute.’
